How to tie a necktie: Four in Hand Knot

The Four in Hand necktie knot is one of the oldest necktie knots that is still in common use today. The Four in Hand knot originated in England during the end of the 18th century. British horsemen used to tie their scarves around their necks with one hand while holding the reins of the four horses drawing the carriage at the same time. The Four in Hand knot was, and still is, a simply, but stylish looking way how to tie a necktie.

Four in Hand knot instructions:

1. Flip up your shirt’s collars and place the necktie around your neck. Make sure that the wider end of the necktie hangs much further down than the narrow end of the tie. This is important since you will only use the wider end of the tie to tie the four in hand knot.
2. The wider end of the necktie crosses over the narrow end. Wrap the wider part of the necktie behind the narrow end.Then, wrap the wider part of the necktie back-around over the narrow end of the tie.
3. Then, pull the wider end of the tie around the part of the necktie coming from your collar as shown in picture number 3 and 4. Don’t tighten the half finished four in hand knot too much. Instead crate a loop at the front of the necktie knot.
4. The pull the wider part of the tie through the loop.Before tightening the necktie, make sure that the wide part of the tie is centered above the four in hand knot.
5. This will guarantee that the narrow part of the tie will lie hidden behind the four in hand knot.
   

Best Neckties for the Four in Hand Knot:

The best looking ties to match to the Four in Hand knot are classic British striped neckties, and regimental ties. The Four in Hand knot is a very traditional necktie knot that is slightly smaller in size and has a somewhat asymmetrical look. In addition to the tie, you should consider the dress shirt, or more importantly, the shirt’s collar when tying a four in hand knot. Since the Four in Hand knot is a smaller tie knot, the best suited dress shirts have a slightly more narrow collar spread. Like all smaller necktie knots, the four in hand knot requires less of the necktie’s length. If you are tall and typically have problems tying a regular sized necktie to the right length, tying a four in Hand knot might be a good option. If this still doesn’t work, you will need XL neckties that are about 2-3 inches longer in length.
